The Mokena Village Board has joined several other communities in banning the sale of recreational cannabis.

The vote came at Monday night’s regular Village Board meeting, when Trustees unanimously approved an ordinance prohibiting the sale of recreational cannabis within the corporate limits of the Village of Mokena.

The Board had previously reviewed and discussed the subject at its September 9 work session.

Monday’s action was taken in response to the Illinois Cannabis Regulation and Tax Act enacted into law earlier this year by the Illinois General Assembly and Governor Pritzker. Other towns and villages in the south suburbs that have banned marijuana sales include, Bolingbrook, Naperville and Plainfield.

The Act legalizes recreational marijuana in Illinois beginning January 1, 2020.
