The Cook County sheriff’s office is looking into whether state laws were violated after the woman accused of killing Marlen Ochoa-Lopez and cutting her baby from her womb showed up to a hospital last month claiming the child was hers. Clarisa Figueroa, and her daughter, Desiree, were charged last week with strangling Ochoa-Lopez to death. The elder Figueroa and the newborn were taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where hospital officials quickly determined she showed no signs of giving birth recently. Despite the results, the hospital didn’t report the situation to DCFS for weeks. State law generally requires hospitals to contact DCFS when there are concerns about a child’s well-being or questions about custody.
