Experts say the City of Joliet could run out of water by the year 2030.

Allison Swisher is Joliet’s Public Utilities Director. She spoke on the Kevin Kollins show about why the city is running out of water. Swisher says the aquifer that Joliet currently uses is not sustainable. The underground water source is not replenished.

A city campaign dubbed “Rethink Water” has been examining options of what Joliet should do regarding the potential water crisis. Swisher said that an initial study was completed, which identified fourteen possible options of bringing water to Joliet, but those fourteen options have now been narrowed down to five.

Swisher said that results of Phase Two of the study will be released in November, and that the Joliet City Council is expected to make a final decision on where the city will get its water by the end of this year.
