Fatal on I-55

PRELIMINARY: Illinois State police responded to a crash which occurred on I-55, northbound south of Lorenzo Road on Thursday, July 25, 2019 at 5:00 pm.
According to preliminary investigations, Unit One (truck tractor semi-trailer) was traveling on I-55 northbound south of Lorenzo Road prior to entering the construction zone. Traffic was backed up beyond the construction zone and Unit One failed to stop before striking the rear of the Unit Two (Pick-up truck). This caused a chain reaction into Unit’s Three (truck tractor semi-trailer), Four (passenger vehicle) and Five (passenger vehicle). Unit’s One (truck tractor semi-trailer) Three (truck tractor semi- trailer)and Four(passenger vehicle)became engulfed in flames. The driver of Unit One was pronounced deceased on the scene. The driver of Unit Two was transported to area hospital for injuries. All northbound lanes will be shut down until further notice. There are no other injuries reported at this time. This remains an ongoing investigation by the Illinois State Police and no further information available at this time.
