Illinois drivers will feel the effects of the gas tax hike for the first time today. State lawmakers doubled the motor fuel tax to 38-cents to cover the cost of a six-year, 33-billion-dollar transportation program. There is also a new crackdown on distracted driving. Drivers who use hand-held phones will now get ticketed for a moving violation. Previously, violators would get off with just a warning.
