Illinois Banning Hair Discrimination

Illinois is taking steps to ban hair discrimination in the state.  Governor Pritzker yesterday signed the CROWN Act into law. The measure codifies protections for Illinoisans discriminated against due to hairstyles historically associated with specific racial groups.  The act categorizes traits such as hair texture or protective styling as race-based and therefore protected under bans against racial discrimination.  The law goes into effect on January 1st, 2023.
