Judge Orders Stateville Inmates To Be Transferred By Sept. 30

A federal judge is ordering Illinois prison officials to relocate most inmates at Stateville Correctional Center in Crest Hill to other prisons around the state by September 30th. The order was made after civil rights lawyers filed a court motion arguing that living conditions at the prison were too hazardous for those housed there. The state plans to tear down the facility and build a new prison on the site. The plan is part of a nearly one-billion-dollar project that would also include demolishing Logan Correctional Center in downstate Lincoln.
