Man Arrested During Firearms Investigation, Crews Find Explosive Device During Search

On October 31, 2024, at approximately 5:30 a.m., the Channahon Police Department, with assistance from the Illinois State Police Tactical Response Team (TRT) SWAT, executed a high-risk search warrant at 22628 Deal Avenue as part of an ongoing firearms investigation. Bill Fossett, age 37, was detained without incident in connection with the investigation. During the initial sweep of the residence, officers discovered what appeared to be an improvised explosive device (IED) in the kitchen area, along with additional bomb making material.

Channahon Police and State Police TRT SWAT established a secure perimeter, evacuated residences immediately adjacent to 22628 Deal Avenue, and issued a “shelter-in-place” order for houses on Deal Avenue between McClintock and Andrew Avenue.

Specialists from the Illinois State Police WMD team, a Will County K9 Unit, and the DuPage County Bomb Squad were called to safely assess and remedy the device, ensuring the safety of officers on scene and nearby residents.

The device was determined to be safe in its current state, though it was constructed in a manner consistent with a “pipe bomb” type of IED, complete with a pipe structure, secured endcaps, and a wick. After confirming the device posed no immediate danger, an “all clear” was issued, and the shelter-in-place order was lifted for residents in the area.

Channahon Police then completed a thorough search of the residence. Fossett has been charged with the following offenses (Additional charges may be pending):

  • Possession of Explosives or Incendiary Device
  • Possession of Firearms / Ammunition without FOID
  • Methamphetamine Possession

Fossett is currently, and will remain in custody. No injuries to officers, suspects or civilians were reported, and there is no ongoing threat to the area.
