Pastor Don Borling Receives Humanitas Award at St. Coletta’s Caritas Benefit
St. Coletta’s of Illinois proudly presented one of its highest honors, the Humanitas Award, to Pastor Don Borling and the congregation of All Saints Lutheran Church in Orland during the annual Caritas Benefit on November 9. The award, given to individuals who serve as role models in society, recognizes Pastor Don’s exceptional commitment to St. Coletta’s and his unwavering support for its mission to assist individuals with developmental and intellectual disabilities.
“Pastor Don and his congregation are true lights in our community,” said Heather Bendick, CEO of St. Coletta’s of Illinois, addressing an audience of parents, participants, staff, community partners, and supporters. “They constantly give of themselves without seeking anything in return.”
The Humanitas Award honors those who demonstrate leadership, community dedication, and a deep commitment to serving individuals with special needs. Pastor Don and his congregation exemplify these qualities through their longstanding partnership with St. Coletta’s. For many years, Pastor Don has played a vital role within the St. Coletta’s family, regularly visiting the campus to lead church services and provide spiritual guidance to participants. His compassionate sermons and gentle presence offer comfort and connection, creating a meaningful impact on those served by St. Coletta’s.
Beyond his spiritual contributions, Pastor Don and the All Saints congregation have gone above and beyond by hosting annual summer picnics for St. Coletta’s participants, where they share food, play games, and enjoy each other’s company, fostering a sense of joy and inclusion. Later this month, they will host a Thanksgiving feast at the church for 70 of St. Coletta’s adult participants.
“Pastor Don’s dedication to our participants and mission is truly remarkable,” Bendick continued. “He and his congregation provide not only spiritual nourishment but also a sense of belonging and community. Their kindness and involvement have made an extraordinary impact, and we are deeply grateful for their ongoing support.”
Years ago, when community members raised concerns about the expansion of a group home, Pastor Don and his congregation showed their solidarity by attending a village board meeting in large numbers, advocating for the rights of disabled residents to live in their community.
“Pastor Don embodies the spirit of generosity and shares it selflessly,” said Bendick.
This year, the Humanitas Award was presented during St. Coletta’s 75th Anniversary Caritas Benefit, a 1950s-themed gala that celebrated the organization’s rich legacy and looked forward to its future. The evening included a tribute to St. Coletta’s history through photographs and videos, honoring its milestones over the last 75 years.
Under Pastor Don’s leadership, All Saints Lutheran Church has consistently demonstrated values that align with those of St. Coletta’s, teaching God’s Word in profound ways and inspiring congregants to positively impact the world. Through their outreach to St. Coletta’s participants, they have truly embodied the spirit of the Humanitas Award, making a lasting difference in the lives they touch.
