Stateville Workers Rally Against Closure In Crest Hill
Hundreds turned out on Thursday to rally against the closure of Stateville prison in Crest Hill. Anders Lindall from AFSCME Council 31 says the closure would affect 500 stateville workers that would have to travel up to 300 miles to get to work for possibly up to 4 years. Lindall says there is plenty of land adjacent to the maximum security facility and if IDOC would do repairs to the current facility while building a new facility to keep workers and inmates at the current facility.
In the last several weeks, buses have been transporting up to 40 prisoners to other locations, bringing the prison population to under 400 from 500 inmates. The Illinois Department of Corrections expects to close the prison by the end of September in order to build a new prison.
