Update: One Dead Following Crash on I-55 on Thursday Morning

Illinois State Police District 5 are sharing details following a fatal crash on I-55 Northbound at Lorenzo Road. It was on Thursday at 9:30 a.m. that troopers were called to the scene of the incident. Preliminary investigations show that four cars were stopped at a construction zone when a fifth vehicle failed to yield and caused a chain reaction crash with the other four vehicles. The vehicle that caused the accident was a tractor semi-trailer while the units involved in the crash were a semi and three passenger vehicles. Multiple individuals were transported to the hospital in various conditions while one of the drives were pronounced deceased at the hospital. The driver of the fifth vehicle, Shabbir Patel, was charged with “Following Too Closely” and “Failure to Reduce Speed to Avoid an Accident.” The Illinois State Police are investigating this crash and no further information is available at this time.
