Will County Sheriff Updates Joliet Township Homicide

As the Will County community continues to mourn the loss of eight individuals senselessly killed on 01/21/2024 by Romeo Nance, the Will County Sheriff’s Office wanted to provide an update regarding this deadly crime spree.

Detectives with the Will County Sheriff’s Office have been able to determine that the weapon used by Romeo Nance in the murder of Toyosi Bakare of Unincorporated Joliet Township, is the same weapon recovered by law enforcement in Natalia, Texas. This is also the same weapon used by Romeo Nance when he took his own life as he fled on foot from law enforcement to avoid capture.

Earlier this week, Will County Detectives arrived in Texas, to take possession of the Red Toyota Camry used by Romeo Nance during his reign of terror throughout our community. In addition, other items of evidentiary value were recovered from the vehicle that will assist both the Will County Sheriff’s Office and the Joliet Police Department in these homicide investigations.

The Will County Sheriff’s Office would like to thank the Medina County Sheriff’s Office in Hondo, Texas and the Jasper County Sheriff’s Office in Carthage, Missouri for assisting in the transfer of critical evidence that the Will County Sheriff’s Office and the Joliet Police Department need to further the investigations regarding these tragic events.

In addition, the Will County Sheriff’s Office would like to thank the many members of the Northeastern Illinois Regional Crime Laboratory (NIRCL) for their quick work in positively identifying the weapon used in the homicide of Toyosi Bakare in Unincorporated Joliet Township.
