Monica DeSantis is taking early retirement. Effective Friday, November 15th. Before anyone jumps to conclusions this decision has been in the works for months. Vice President of Digital Sales and Development Brian Foster says, “When I first heard that Monica was retiring, I had mixed emotions. I was happy she was taking time to focus on her family and herself, but I instantly felt the sting of losing such a great news person. She worked hard to shine a light on our leaders for the benefit of our listeners. We will miss you Monica, thank you for your years of service.” The search for a new morning news anchor began about eight weeks ago and the position will be filled by two news veterans, alternating shifts between Dawn DeSart and Evan Bredeson.
Below is a note from Monica:
After 35 years in radio I’m hanging up my microphone. It’s been a wild ride from Toronto, Hamilton, Chicago and Joliet. Radio has seen me through some of the lowest points of my life and the very best (marrying Kevin over 27 years ago). This year has proven to be difficult with the loss of my father and two very dear friends which deepened my decision to spend more time with my family and friends.
Saying goodbye to radio equates to leaving behind a piece of one’s happiness. I’ve valued being part of your morning and afternoon routines in Joliet, Chicago and Toronto.
Working with Scott Slocum began in 2005 when I was working downtown at Shadow/Metro Traffic. Since then we have worked together on and off for almost 20 years. Some of the fondest memories include our Halloween skit where I over acted and ran into a door. But the conversations on and off the air will be missed as will AlpahMedia staff and fun events.
Some of the stations I’ve worked at include, Key590, CFRB 1010 AM, Shadow/Metro at various stations including, 670 The Score, WCKG plus I worked at WBBM-AM, WLS-AM and the short lived, FM News. But the last 12 years have been in Joliet at WJOL-AM.
To my wonderful husband Kevin, you’ve played a significant role in shaping my radio personality and have graciously endured being the subject of my playful jokes. I’m grateful for your “exceptional” sense of humor (inside joke) and vast football knowledge.
The upcoming chapter promises to be thrilling, with travel adventures alongside Kevin and quality time with family beyond weekends. I acknowledge and thank the WJOL audience. I appreciated the loyalty of WJOL listeners and everyone who has accompanied me on this journey and all individuals who have contributed to my growth. Their unwavering support is sincerely valued. My last day as a full time employee will be November 15th. This isn’t goodbye but so long for now. Thank you all!
