Excessive Heat Warning Continues until this evening – Will County Executive Reminds Residents of Local Cooling Centers

The heat wave in Chicago isn’t letting up yet. The National Weather Service says temps will be in the 90s today with heat index values in the triple digits. An Excessive Heat Warning is in effect until tonight throughout much of the region. Residents should take extra precautions if they are going to work or spend time outside.

With high temperatures throughout the region and an Excessive Heat Warning in place, Will County Executive Jennifer Bertino-Tarrant and the Will County Emergency Management Agency (EMA) are reminding residents to utilize local cooling centers if necessary.

“Now is not the time to take risks if you are without air conditioning or are planning long periods of time outdoors,” said Bertino-Tarrant. “Please take advantage of the available cooling centers. I am also urging residents to check in on their neighbors and family, especially the elderly.”

There are cooling centers available in almost every community in the county, including in village halls, fire stations, libraries, or other public meeting sites. A full listing of known locations is available on the Will County EMA’s website at www.willcountyema.org.

“With a hot summer expected, households should plan ahead by knowing the signs of heat-related illnesses and knowing their nearest cooling center,” said Will County EMA Director Allison Anderson. “The negative effects of extreme heat can impact people of all ages.”

The risks of extreme heat can include discomfort and fatigue, along with more serious illnesses sch as heat cramps, heat exhaustion, and heat stroke. Extreme heat can be particularly hazardous for children, seniors, those with special needs, and pets.

Simple steps can be taken to prevent these health risks, including limiting direct sunlight, avoiding overexertion, wearing lightweight clothing, and consuming plenty of fluids.
