Coal City Man Charged With Murder, Convicted Then Overturned Could Go Free In Weeks Pending New Trial

A Will County Judge has ordered a convicted killer who was granted a new trial to be released from prison. In three weeks, Jeremy Boshears will walk out of jail for the first time since 2017. The Coal City married man was convicted of killing his girlfriend, 24-year-old Katie Kearns and concealing her murder in a 2022 murder trial. But in January of this year, Will County Judge Dave Carlson granted a new trial due to errors made during the original trial. Under the SAFE-T act judges have the discretion to release defendants.

Prosecutors could challenge the release date before May 20. No new trial date has been set.
