Wilmington Police were busy Thursday night into the early hours of Friday morning following a fatal chain reaction crash on I-55 Thursday afternoon.

The Illinois State Police closed I-55 following the crash to conduct a death investigation. Traffic was rerouted down Rt 129 in Wilmington to Rt 53 to the north.

Thousands of cars made their way through downtown Wilmington over about a 9 hour period; stretching the Wilmington police thin.
