Illinois U.S. Senators Dick Durbin and Tammy Duckworth are advocating for a Juneteenth federal holiday. The senators are co-sponsoring the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act. The holiday commemorating the end of slavery in America would be observed on June 19th, with a paid day off for federal workers on the nearest weekday. The celebration is already an official holiday in 46 states and Washington, DC.
